a) uma formula com 23.8 % de DEET protegeu por 301.5 minutos (mais ou menos 5 horas);

b) uma formula com 20 % de DEET protegeu por 234 minutos (quase 4 horas);

c) uma formula com 6,65 % de DEET protegeu por 112 minutos (quase 2 horas);

d) uma formula com 4,75 % de DEET protegeu por 88 minutos (mais ou menos 1 hora e meia);

e) uma formula à base de IR3535  protegeu por  22.9 minutos;

We all know the scene: someone discovers that is being deceived by fake propaganda, complains about it and the author of the false advertising defends himself by disqualifying the accuser, without ever proving that the complaint was false.

Add to this the lack of government support for the complaint and the result, as well known, is that the claim falls into the void, without repair or elimination of the misleading conduct.

Frustrating, right?

And what about the false advertising on the effectiveness of the repellents against aedes aegypti, the ones our children use for going safely to school, or used by pregnant in Zika times?

Well, the Protest NGO warned consumers that the repellent sold in the Brazilian market is not effective for the period disclosed by their manufacturers. These laboratories, rather than disclose their own results of efficacy trials, which where supported by brazilian National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance - ANVISA - just limited themselves to disqualify the Proteste's results that revealed that the best repellent available offer protection from 1:30 to 2:45 hours.

So, we pay for "10 hours" of protection and take home just 2:45 hours of effectiveness, ending up being bitten by Aedes aegypti. That is dengue's mosquito. Or zika's mosquito. Or chikungunya's mosquito. Your choice. Or Lack of choice.

A study conducted in 2002 and published by the New England Journal of Medicine ( "Comparative Efficacy of Insect Repellents against Mosquito Bites", available in http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa011699) made a comparative test for the effectiveness of insect repellents containing DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide, formerly known as N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) and IR3535 (ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate), and found out that DEET products protect longer against Aedes aegypti, wherein:

a) formulated with 23.8% DEET protected by 301.5 minutes (about 5 hours);

b) formulated with 20% DEET protected for 234 minutes (about 4 hours);

c) A formulation with 6.65% DEET protected for 112 minutes (about 2 hours);

d) A formulation with 4.75% DEET protected by 88 minutes (about 1½ hours);

e) a formula to IR3535 base protected by 22.9 minutes;

f) bracelets (wristlet) with repellent did not work.

The study also refers to other products whose effectiveness varies 9-20 minutes, but, let's face it, is almost the time it take to use the repellent on children. There is also an alert to the fact that repellents do not protect everyone equally, what makes sense, because, as mothers know, some people suffer more insect bites than others.

But, as Brazilian people never give up, surviving so many mismanagement, we will continue buying the short-effective repellents because there's no way to convince children to use pants in this summer... we'll also keep cleaning our pet's water bowls and keep closed our home's windows and doors (besides this heat!).

And we will hope that local governments START cleaning up streets and parks and that the health centers have enough doctors and medicine.

Qualidade de vida = qualidade de relacionamentos

Eu e um cão são-bernardo, longe no tempo

Ah, a falta de tempo! Trabalhar, curtir a família e os amigos...

Como equilibrar todas as atividades diárias (que ainda incluem fazer exercícios físicos, ler, ver a Sue Heck no The Middle - Warner Channel -, blogar e dormir) sem ficar maluco?

Ah, the lack of time! Work, enjoy family and friends…

How to balance all the daily activities (which also include exercising, reading, watching Sue Heck at The Middle – Warner Channel -, blogging and sleeping) without going crazy?

Well, Niel Marsh, at TED, talk about how to balance family time, personal time and productivity.

To him, ‘certain job and career choices are fundamentally incompatible to being engaged on a day-to-day basis with a young family.[…] The reality of the society that we’re in is that there are thousands of thousands of people out there leading lives of quiet, screaming desperation, where they work long hard hours at jobs they hate to eneble them to buy things they don’t need to impress people they don’t like.”.

He suggests that small changes in our day-to-day routine, as to dedicate more time to children, may have a huge impact in our quality of life (and also in the society quality of life). For him, ‘small things matter! Being balanced doesn’t mean dramatic upheaval in your life. With the smallest investments in the right place you can radically transform the quality of your relationships and your quality of life.”.

He says that, doing that, society will be transformed, as its definition of success will be changed away from the notion “that the person with the most money when he dies wins, to a more thoughtful and balanced definition of what a life-well-live looks like.”.

Well, I guess that's what have been doing all those who prefer experiences (such as trips, barbecues and evenings of good conversation) to the accumulation of material things (expensive new clothes, a the ultimate cell phone etc).

Like my grandmother (*).

*Note: I did not even include myself in this group because each day I feel more and more socially displaced by having a phone whose role is only the one that I need: phone calls.

DOPAZ

Eu me sinto assim.

What about the security of the population in Brazil?

Who walks on these tupiniquim streets - especially at night - knows that their feeling of security is merely transitory, because on their way, they think to themselves: 'So far so good.". It’s like if at the next corner, their luck could turn completely against them.

I feel that way. I believe that other Brazilians do feel like that too, especially because when some of us will talk about a foreign country, he or she usually enhances the security - or the sense of insecurity - that's out there. Just watch the program of the Band television, “Brasileiros pelo mundo” (*) to get an idea of how we Brazilian feel insecure in our own country, because it’s usual to the interviewed on the program to mention how he feels safe on the streets abroad.

However, despite the fact that our streets are unsafe (did someone forget the PCC attacks on the State of Sao Paulo in 2006?), It is sad that the achievement of peace depends on the brute force. To me, that means an astonishing discovery of state failure on crime prevention and social planning.

In late 2010, I read the excellent book written by the journalist Tahiane Stochero called "Dopaz," (**) in which she describes the pacifying action of Brazilian troops in Haiti, narrating, with the language of the barracks, the unfolding of what you might call ' violence to peace. ".

The scenes on the book, were real and frightening, and the brutal subjugation of Haiti society for the marginality leads to accept the violence from the UN troops (integrated by the Brazilian DOPAZ) as a necessary evil.

But she was talking about Haiti and here in Brazil, I live in a nice relatively calm neighborhood at Ribeirão Preto city, far away from the daily violence of bandits and police, and until now, much of my insecurity felling was due to the violence I saw at television, especially on news about the Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

However, in recent months, it seems that the whole thing changed and I have to face the fact that the Rio de Janeiro is totally dependent on a peacekeeping force to reduce (?) the violence on its streets, like Haiti.

As I said before at this blog, it seems to me that the events that take place in Rio de Janeiro anticipate others at the rest of the country.

So, will Ribeirao Preto security come to depend on a peacekeeping force? And Franca city? And Ituverava town?

I hope not.

I believe that the other Brazilian cities will act preemptively on public security and I will not hear traumatized friends telling me they were taken hostage by bandits who broke into their houses.

* P.s.- The correct name of the television show is "Classe Turista, o mundo segundo os brasileiros"

Post-Lima

I do not know if it is the fault of the ten years that divide my first visit to Peru - when I was in Cuzco -, from this recent one, in which I went to Lima; I do not know if it is due to the lack of the visual impact caused by the clash between the Hispanic culture - as a representation of culture Iberian that is so familiar to me - and the Inca culture - as strange as rich -, but the fact is that only in Lima I understood that the Spanish were not more invaders than other people (wari, Incas, etc.) that preceded them in territorial conquests in Latin America, and if there is any difference between these and those, is just the fact that the Spaniards were the last ones to do it.

Lima mix with its modern buildings pre-Hispanic symbols, that are now used as symbols for decoration and clothing. Pacha Mama was transformed into a capitalist icon, apparently, without constraints.

In Lima city, with the exception of the Huaca Pucllana, an archaeological ruin, nothing seems to be really old but meticulously wrought, if not in tribute to the past, to seduce present.

Lima displays everywhere its Literature Nobel, Vargas Llosa, whose gaze adorns billboards across the city.

At a first glance, it seems that Peru represented by Lima is democratic and progressive, but a closer glance reveals that the streets of Lima are at a synthetic peace, not established by the debate and respect for diversity, but imposed by its strongly armed police officers, from its shock troops guarding the historic center, its mounted police.

That blatant show of power from State, before providing security evokes memories of the days of violence experienced in Peru hit by guerrilla groups, or the days when the corruption took the Peruvian people dignity and hope. Herein, Lima reflects the reality of Brazilian people, who now are getting used to the idea of peacekeeping police in the hills of Rio de Janeiro.

In 2011, the Peruvian faces will come into confrontation because the progressive and liberal one - that arise in Lima on the clean and well kept streets, in its excellent restaurants, its varied commerce and its splendid gardens where children play - will face, at the presidential election, those backward and anti-democratic ones - represented by the strength with which the State seems to maintain a fragile balance of security.

So I hope that the next Peruvian president honor its friendly and progressive people and that extends to the whole country the wonders I’ve seen from Barranco district to the historic center.

Chitas, chirimoyas, o amor e o presidente

Vista do quarto do hotel Radisson Miraflores - 2010

Our third day in Lima was brighter than the previous days, as the sun almost came out that morning.

On that day, especially enlightened, we would visit the San Isidro district.

So, we've left Radisson hotel and walked toward the north shore, zigzagging between the streets of Miraflores - Madrid, Rome, Francia - and its friendly residential blocks until we reach the malecón, that was a beautiful square in whose center was a black and white lighthouse. From that square we could see a tennis club right on the edge of the ravine; everything was very organized there, and people walked their dogs by leashes attached - in obedience to the signs that warned of possible punishments to owners that let their pets run loose -, the children had fun in a colorful playground of plastic, and couples in love rested on the grass.

Then that I’ve realized how much Lima is a children friendly city: excellent public playgrounds and sidewalks, wonderfull gardens all over it and several restaurants with playgrounds (including in Larcomar). Yes, as a mother, I was impressed with this, so what? In Ribeirao Preto city, it’s so hard to find a decent playground (without videogames) to distract the little ones - and adults too - in restaurants, that my family just used to go to a pizzeria that entertained children with an artist with puppets; when the place no longer offered this attraction, we realized how bad the pizza was and never came back.

Pleased by the children of Lima, we keep walking through Miraflores until we reach the Ovalo (roundabout) Gutierrez, a very interesting spot, with a church (Santa Maria Reina Parish), a supermarket (Wong), a mall of cinemas (Cine Planet, where is also a bookstore) and many restaurants!

But, as our target for lunch was the restaurant was TANTA, located in Av. Pancho Hierro 117, San Isidro, we’ve took a taxi and crossed streets with beautiful olive trees (Olivares). The restaurant is in front of a simple and crowded chifa (a Chinese restaurant) and contrasts with this to be quite sophisticated, with large glass windows facing the street, but nevertheless, the atmosphere in TANTA is very cool, so there was a counter where one could see a sample of every offered by the house. I ate a delicious "chicken aji “,that looks like a chicken strogonoff, but with some kind of mustard sauce.

After lunch, we took our way back to Miraflores through Conquistadores avenue, whose shops looks like the ones from Oscar Freire street in Sao Paulo.

Back to the Ovalo Gutierrez, we entered the Wong supermarket, bought a glass of water and a packet of cacao nibs covered with dark chocolate! All that walking let us hunger again; besides, in a foreign country, even a supermarket is an adventure, with all that new things - or diferent names for the same things - as its fruits (as 'chirimoya') and fishes (as the 'chita' of Cala's dish) and sweets...

From there we’ve follow the Comandante Espinar Avenue, and then Pardo Avenue, and from there the Diagonal Avenue, where there is a big and lovely square with a large craft fair and many cafes and restaurants for tourists (with an annoying approach). We escaped by Larco and took refuge in Larcomar; where, in the end of the day we had a nice coffee in Havana, where we stayed until we saw that the sun was shinning over the sea, illuminating it in a way that the restaurant La Rosa Nautica seemed to be a ship about to sail.

So we runned away from Havana to see the most romantic sunset of the city: at the Parque del Amor, a nice square in which center is a giant cople kissing framed by low walls tiled with romantic phrases ... oh, oh, after watching such sunset in the South Pacific, we could only finish the day at the traditional LA ROSA NAUTICA restaurant.

At night, we took a cab to the restaurant and we saw along the way the signs about TSUNAMI! Yikes! Those were signs indicating the passages through which one could escape from the big wave reaching the city above! That evening we would dine at the only restaurant – at least, the only one we saw - which was right above the sea, on a breakwater.

I confess that I was somewhat fearful, although the taxi driver said that the last time the sea receded (a classic sign of a tsunami), a few months ago, there were no giant waves engulfing everything in its path.

We crossed the long wooden deck to Rosa Nautica. As we had no reservation at the restaurant, we could not sit in one of the tables that are next to the glass windows (right on top of the waves). So I could stop thinking about the movement of the sea in order to identify early signs of a tsunami, and I ended up focusing on the delicious fish I’d chosen.

Master Tzen kept paing attention to the movement around us (not to identify tsunami, for sure, because he is not given to such neuroses) and he recognized, at one of the tables next to a big glass window, ALEJANDRO TOLEDO, former Peruvian President (2001-2006) and now candidate for the elections that will happen this year, 2011 (in which he faces, among other candidates, Ollanta Humala and Fujimori's daughter).

Well, due to the taxi driver who, on our first day in city, prevented us from visiting Rosa Nautica to lead us to Cala restaurant, we would not have had that brief encounter with Toledo. And, of course, have not known Cala.
