At the suggestion of Master Tzen, I took a fast course on wine. There, I could enjoy four different types of wine, while listening to explanations about their region of origin, it's grape, etc etc.
But he certanly realized my lack of skill for the chatter on flavors and aromas and everything else - and I must confess myself, I am somewhat brutish for it -, and then he came with another of his cool ideas: to make more close to us, Brazilians, all those aromas and flavors that a good wine remind us!
Yes!
Assuming that the people of our generation hardly proved a carambola (or blackberry) and that, indeed, only one of us knows how an alcaçus looks like, Master Tzen proposes to use in oenophiles conversations smells and flavors from fruits that an ordinary brazilian knows, like those from the fruits we actually eat (although usually as an obligation): bananas, apples and papayas only.
Of course that would restrict - a lot - the range of possible descriptions.
Therefore, in the absence of identification of such common fruits in the smell or taste of wines, we would be able to use our regional vegetables: zucchini, beets, green beans, taro, yam, manioc ... And also our favorite grains: black beans, soy beans, chickpeas., after all, it's all about taste memory. Thus, the entire oeno-conversation (that is well tolerated just for the unparalleled pleasure of a good glass of wine) would be much easier and affordable.
The hard part would be to admit that the expensive wine that you have won your brother in law has a flavor that refers, say, a nice jalo bean.

Occupy Wall Street
Tzen Master figured it out: Forest Gump started the Occupy Wall Street Protest.

Teoria do Não-Pertencimento
In my time off the Web, I've, finally, found my gym: there, teachers have patience enough (like the grandmother’s one) to adjust the equipment for me and also to explain me a thousand times the correct way to perform the movements to avoid injuries. In this academy, others seems to be so clumsy as me (except in rare cases) and seems to need as much help as I do, even when they do exercise for a long time. Above it all, others are of my age (or older)!
Great, huh?!? So what bothers me so much when I'm there?
I spoke with the Tzen Master about this issue, and he explained me his theory of Not-Belonging.
According to this theory, the feeling of discomfort one feels in certain environments is due to the fact that we have created a strong image of ourselves and end up closing us for the new experiences that do not fit in such image.
In other words, we developed a character with which we identify ourselves and that we want to be moving in a predetermined scenario, but, of course, as the scenario is impossible to delimit every time, we feel uncomfortable when we judge that our character does not belong to the environment where we are. Hence, we get the uncomfortable feeling of not belonging.
Tzen Master explained that the shy ones (or ex-shy, so to speak) are most affected by the sense of not belonging because, deep down, they used to believed they had discovered a way to control their world, until they be faced with the unknown.
For him, the Not-Belonging theory would explain why some adults, unaccustomed to the environment of a gym, feel ridiculous when their characters have to do the most ridiculous positions in public in order to exercise and stay in shape.
Okay. But I still think it is because of the damn lazy!

Spain won the World Cup; Uruguay had the best scorer of the Championship... So, the Spanish language have been in the news in Brazil, to my delight.
I just love to hear the language of my latin americans neighbors, especially because I get the impression that they are more fluently speakers at their native language than us, brazilians, in portuguese.
I'll try to explain it better: If an interviewer on the street catchs by surprise an average person (who is not used to deal with words as a journalist or intellectual) whose native language is Spanish, he seems to express himself better than a Brazilian person caught in the same situation (each in their own language, of course). Yes, to answer the question asked of a sudden, there goes the Spanish-speaking citizens abusing of adjectives: "Me encantaron los colores y sonidos graceful, aunque, para mi, un parecian sombrios....". Brazilian people, on the other hand, would seem rather more laconic: "I enjoyed it."
Are we, brazilians, more practical when it comes to language? I do not believe we do so. I'll stuck to Tzen Master's theory that we seem less able to use our native language due to the fact that we are still somewhat Foreigners in portuguese, once we've been forced to use it since the Marquis of Pombal banned the use of the indigenous languages that we spoke fluently here (Directory of Indian License, 1757).

Tzen master went to the Book Fair of Ribeirão Preto (this year, 2010, it will happens from June 10 and 20).
In vain, he sought the big publishers whose books he likes to taste in major bookstores (Saraiva, Fnac, culture, etc. To Read): walking around between the young people who were crowded in there, the only he could find was some college publishers (like Edusp), another ones totally unknown and others which exposed miscellaneous products (from ultra-cheap books - $ 3.00 as some sort of English-Portuguese dictionary - to apparently trinkets made in china - as a puzzle whose pieces do not fit right). Oh, he also saw a stall for the Press Journal.
He had read somewhere that this was the second largest book fair open-air of the country.
Being the great reader he is, Tzen Master certainly expect a plural literary fair, with quality books, but to his disappointment, he had to had to content himselve to a fair composed of public publishers and nano-popular ones...
Cursing who sold him the idea that there it was really possible to have a quality literary fair of popular culture, he returned home, disappointed, vowed to never set foot in the third fair of our national ranking (and probably last one) from that same ranking.
Well, at least we will have the baloons on sky next year. Don't we?

Mapa vivo. Morto. Vivo. Morto. Vivo...

Vi a palestra e achei-a inspiradora!

Tzen Master, in one of his enlightened moments, discovered the site TED.COM , with "riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world".
He introduced me to it explicitly recommending that I first heard on the talk by Jill Bolte Taylor, the lady of excellent diction and accessible vocabulary (the lecture is in English). She's presented as a woman that've "got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: She had a massive stroke, and watched as her brain functions -- motion, speech, self-awareness -- shut down one by one. An astonishing story."
I saw the speech and it is really inspiring! Jill Taylor is fully recovered from the stroke (it took her 8 years) and now talks about her experience as if she had achieved Nirvana: she explains that stroke affected the left hemisphere of her brain responsible for logical reasoning, and that her right hemisphere remained intact; so she lost track of her individuality, therefore she no more distinguished her body from the environment around her. She says that the sensation of being part of the Whole gave her great peace.
For her, the experience resulted on the conscience that we've got the power to choose who and how we want to be in the world.

What I saw in Niterói (Morro do Bumba), in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities whose neighborhoods have been devastated by storm, resulting in hundreds of dead is a slap in my pale face, that looks at it all from a bubble of comfort.
At 2010, here in Brazil, it was not an earthquake that brought us the tragedy: it was the rain. Strong and ruthless, it was the rain that revolved the ground and showed, once more, the terrible neglect of our governments, our precarious urbanization (and also urbanity), our neglect to the community... showed my own carelessness.
Tzen master told me not to be too impressed about it: for him, if the major television networks shows, primarily, Rio de Janeiro, it is natural to its aesthetic and point of view spread to be prevalent and to affect us all over the country. For him, we're simply different from Rio de Janeiro. But I do not believe that: for me, Rio de Janeiro, in a certain way, only anticipates what inevitably ends up coming to the rest of us (the slums, the violence, dengue).
Daily, I've ignored my sense of community - now I understand it - because I allowed it to myself, in exchange for emotional comfort. Yes, because it is uncomfortable to think that our young people leave school semi-illiterate, and is also uncomfortable to know the range of possible bright future passing by them. And it's not nice to know that without an education that enables them to fully exercise their citizenship, our youth will continue to be easily target by palliative and opportunistic policies. Urban slums are expanding. In Brazil, mental slums are expanding too.
It is an area of mind slums that I am now: I do not use my knowledge to anything that might redeem us as a community. Rather, I am part of the problem: I am a mere observer of reality, without interfering in it, and although I've tried not to disturb others, I'm certainly not a helping.
However, that attitude of mine - I think now - is not enough when it comes to a country as unequal as this. We do not have an advanced degree of civility that allow us to fully exercise our individuality (for instance, living only respecting the rights of others). Not yet.
I think the that this historical moment requires a movement and a larger intervention beyond the border of our bubble of comfort: the slums do not seem to be in the process of reversal. I even think that ignorance and brutality definitely settled between us, with the connivance of mental slum dwellers.
I have a bitter taste in my mouth because I do not know exactly what to do from this moment of lucidity.
It was so easier to deal with the tragedy when it was not so nearby. What to do when the sense of community requires more than a pray or a penny to charity?
How to play my little life while our community is sunk in a brutal mud of ignorance?
At the radio, I hear the music of Chico Science & Nação Zumbi (poorly translated):
From mud to chaos, from chaos to the mud
A robbed man is never wrong
From mud to chaos, from chaos to the mud
A robbed man is never wrong

Tzen Master thinks that my idea of a global community is far too utopian, because, for him, there are different stages of awareness and mutual respect, not only between different human groups, but also within them and therefore not all the people would share an atavistic notion of equality and mutual respect.
He mentions, as an example, what he witnessed in the rural area of Minas Gerais (Brazil): a rural worker was the first one in hi neighborhood to buy a motorcycle. Every time a neighbor asks hum for a ride to the highway (so that he can catch a bus from there), this rural biker charge for the travel. But he does not charge for being greedy, but rather because if he does not charge his neighbors would be ask him every time to ride them up to the road and he would, probably, be busy with that task all day long. Tzen Master cherishes the individuality and anonymity achievement in large urban centers (specially those with structured economy, like Sao Paulo city) and he believes that life in community is not an advantage when it involves giving up from personal achievements, such as free time and freedom of movement.
I understand his point of view, but I insist on a sense of community that is independent from civility.
In fact, I think that the sense of community, equality, opens the way for civility, despite the profound cultural and economic differences between the various group of people that art part of the global community: even though some of us are more accustomed to the notion of respect for the individuality of another person than others, we are all thouched by the pain of others, because of our human being's identity, and we will probably be willing to help him with anything within our reach.
Therefore I believe that the rural biker would be perfectly able to take up to the highway a neighbor in case of necessity, whithout charging for it.
The sense of community is intrinsic to human beings and is also the foundation to a civility act. The sense of community, coupled with civility, is what conduces to individual freedom.
I understand that external factors (as a lack of safety or food) may interfere with the ability of people to respect others, but acting without civility at a given moment does not means that is not possible to act with respect at the next moment.
Thus, in an environment such as Haiti's post-earthquake, when humanitarian aid is being provided by the global community, but still poorly, given the initial problems of coordination of activities (so we've heard), acting with civility may be incompatible with the survival instincts of individuals, as passively waiting for a ration of food is becoming less feasible and can mean the difference between life and death. I hope that soon, this situation changes and that the Haitian people build their peace.
For others, that have food and shelter, there is no justification for the lack of respect, of civility.
In our Brazilian reality, I hope that our politicians who were touched by the situation in Haiti, especially those who just learned of the political and economic history of that country before the earthquake (now in evidence), acts to eliminate the poverty and insecurity that, here, are not so diferent from those they had.

In the old center of the city, I’ve walked to exhaustion, which allowed me to see many of the old houses (unfortunately, many of them are abandoned or had fallen into disrepair over the years).

Montevidéu... Tristan Narvaja
A saw the Tristán Narvaja fair (which began in the street with the same name, but now extends to the various streets that cut it), which, according to Tzen Master, do not end, only decreases.
There is everything there: from fruit to nails, from rusty keys to the valuable antiques, from clothing to samba drumming.

Cinema

Tears dried, I got my pitchfork and, prepared to shake the old habits, started to plan my future: it went through a brand new pair of running shoes and a good gym.

There is less than one month to the end of the year ... coincidence or not, an early midlife crisis has befallen at this blogger ... a real crisis of my age, rather, like so many of which I've survived until now.
Tzen Master told me that what I feel is natural and arises from the fact that we are now at an age (I, 35) once unimaginable to us. Back to those days, at the height of our youth, when nobody dared to call us 'sir', 'mistress', start again something was always possible and advisable to. Now that the path taken is long, it can not be disregarded at a fresh start.
Considering that, I asked him if the adventures dreamed should be revised to fit the reality of the body that begins to fade... and he told me not: the body is that we cast to allow us to live the adventures dreamed.

Mestre Tzen no trânsito
Car stopped at the street crossing; Master Tzen on the wheel; an old lady waiting, outside the sidewalk, the car cross the street. I told him to sign for the woman to pass on the first place, in order to make - who knows - her day happier with that kindness (that we don't use to do at Brazil); but the Master remarks:
"If I sign up for her to pass, the old woman may get anxious about it, and that could make her try to go faster than she naturally could and then she might can stumble and fall and get hurt. We have to let each one follow their own pace.."
That's the reason of my blogging.

Mãe de desenho... cartoon mommies?!?
Ok.
Quanta morbidez!"Ela me conhece).
Ok I thought a lot about the teachings of Master Tzen on children’s education and I’ve concluded that I do not have - all - the answers nor control over the variables that can influence the future of children (note that the terrible brazilian education I’ve received at 1980’s have conditioned me to always seek for an answer ... or rather, the only acceptable answer ... and such mental configuration I want to avoid in my children... as long as for me, there is no hope: I'm destined to continue looking templates ...). Anyway, the only right answer I’ve found in my search for a good school for my pre-literate kid was this: I'm not a cartoon-mother (those who never lose patience - never, ever! - And always have a few well-chosen words to say, no matter what is happening)! Duh!
In fact, nowadays I know that not even my own mother is – or was - a cartoon-mother (detail: she does not conform with the name and appearance of this blog, which, lucky for me, made her back off from reading it: "Pale? Why pale? And what about this Black screen? How morbid!" Well, she happens to know me).
More: my mother would not know being a cartoon-mother because her mother is not one of these fictional figures created just to confuse kids (who must think, when watching them on tv: "My mother is not like this..." ) and to set an example for us real fallible people... I, my mother, my grandmother ... In spite of so many mistakes that we’ve made here and there, we are not better or worse mothers... Each one of us is just reflections of how our generations had faced its responsibilities as parents ... And how we, imperfect, are more interesting worlds than the predictable cartoon-mommies.
Thus, when it comes to my kid’s school choice for next year, I’ve decided for the art-education method, in which children learn on a constructivist method (learning theory), but from artistic references.
Consulted, Master Tzen said he was too old to be amused by this sort of things and, therefore, he thinks that art-education methods (in addition to chat about the constructivist method) only exists in order to entertain parents. He does not believe that the presentation of pieces of art (like Mozart, Pixinguinha, Noel Rosa, Picasso, Portinari, etc.) for children have more positives impacts on their education than the one resulting from mangue-beat or the image of Pucca or Cocóricó. In fact, he believes that this kind of education through art has, exclusively, only an almanac-culture effect on children, and even that it could be detrimental for them due to the fact that it would impose to them an ancient aesthetic sense, by using ancient languages (he asked : why old paintings and no photos?)...
I disagree with him at this point (although I agree that the idea may seem appealing) because I think that through art-education, children may have the opportunity to establish a different point of view about world surrounding them, after all, Pucca is already part of their lives. At least, that art education may prevent them from complying with our culture of 'puxadinhos' (a sort of small parts of a house, like a bedroom or a bathroom, made a few months after the main construction). That's what I hope. And I think that a cartoon-mommy would agree with me.
But, to end the conversation, Master Tzen said that the solution for my education issue was quite simple: if the school had great teachers (whatever was the method adopted), children would, for sure, access a highly level education; on the other hand, if the teachers were mediocre, there would be no educational theory able to save those students from intellectual poverty.
A cartoon-mom would certainly agree with him, right there from Canada.

Imagino, apenas.

Educação Infantil: imagem e semelhança?

Escola alfabetizadora ideal?
Com que filosofia educacional?
E quanto `a minha ideologia sócio-cultural?
Perguntei ao Mestre Tzen, que tascou:
"Que sei eu do que as crianças precisarão no futuro?
