Brasiliotices: a DENGUE e o inverno...

 "Oh, Finally! The cold and dry weather! Now will be finished..."

"Will be finished the garbage scattered around the city? Will the City Hall do something to finish dengue fever?"

"... Will be finished this dengue ISSUE."

Dualidades: Ribeirão Preto, dengue e queimadas.

Ribeirão Preto tem dois ciclos econômicos anuais:
 junho-novembro: queimadas...

Ribeirão Preto city has two economical cycles per year:
june-november: sugar cane straw burning...

...dezembro a maio: dengue.

... december-may: dengue.

Retorno a Puno- Peru - ano 2000

We took a bus in Copacabana to Puno (Peru), from where we would be able to reach the floating Islands of Uros (Islas Flotante).

When we got to the Peru / Bolivia border, the bus stopped at the Bolivian side and we had to walk, holding our passports, until we enter the small room where the customs officer stamped the document and let us enter the country, what we’ve made walking to the bus that was waiting for us on the Peruvian side.

From there we traveled to Puno, an unpleasant and dirty town, in which we did not expect to spend more than a few hours – enough time to visit the artificial islands of Lake Titicaca.

Puno seemed to us, in everything, opposed to Copacabana and it was very difficult to choose a reliable place for a meal. I think Puno was the only place where we all agree with our Chinese friend that said that the pasta with tomatoes sauce was the safest dish ever (she had been eating exclusively that food since we left the plane in La Paz, but all the others at our expedition had been, so far, eating something else, like meat, potatoes, etc - well, I must say that she was the only member of our expedition who did not get sick).

After that meal, we found a guide who took us to the islands of the Uros, absurdly floating on water, because it is made of layers of totora, a native plant of Titicaca – which, to me, looked like some kind of aquatic grass.

We boarded on a small boat and sail for a while before we see the small islands of Uros. We saw, around the islands, several boats made of yellow reed, very similar to the one I’d seen in the documentary Kon Tiki (which is the name of the raft used by Thor Heyerdahl in 1947 at his expedition across the Pacific, from Peru to prove his thesis that the people from pre-Inca South American -would have sailed to the Polynesian islands).

Our boat took us to the larger floating island, over which were many houses, all made of that kind of straw, totora, where we staggered, as the floor moved under our feet.

What a wonderful place! Amazed, we could hardly believe in our eyes: some people cooking in outdoor kitchens, others selling crafts made by a pretty ceramic... and also there was an odd museum of stuffed animals inside one of the houses.

After that, we’ve returned to Puno and that first bad impression had already been diminished by the impressive sight of Uros Islands.

From Puno, we made a night journey to Cuzco, by bus.

Peru em dezembro

Imagem: Cebiche-don-lucho (fonte: Wikipedia - Autor Ledelboy - Luis Delboy (Don Lucho)

In a few days I will go to Lima, using the accumulated mileage to explore the Peruvian cuisine, full of ceviches and other things I can not imagine.

To prepare my eyes for those three days of hiking in Miraflores and San Isidro Barranco, a friend lent me the book The Bad Girl, written by the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, and I'm devouring it in an unusual velocity.

It will be my first visit to Lima, the cloudy town (which I imagine absurd, as if it was a mix of São Paulo and Canoa Quebrada ... an overcast sky over the buildings and bridges and those over the mountain slopes and, above it all, the sea breeze) ... each day I get more and more curious about it.

But this is not my first visit to Peru: this December completes ten years since I’ve been to Machu Picchu.

That very year 2000, a year shrouded in magic and superstitions, I was in a pre-atheism (or agnostic, if you prefer) and pro-adventure phase of my life, ready to see everywhere in two weeks (my vacation period at those times).

Of course to go to Machu Picchu, then, was also a point of honor for any Latin American, especially if, like me, he or she had an ideological history that oscillate between the boutique-hippie and neo-esoteric.

Specially if there were good friends willing to embark on the adventure.

I’m not sure how we got stiked to the idea of going to Machu Picchu (who was the one that invented it in our little group?), but there were five of us willing to embrace the adventure: me, from Minas Gerais, three from  Sao Paulo State (one from Araraquara city and another one from Bauru city and and a girl from São Paulo city, who was born in China) and another one from Pernambuco State (Recife).

Accents togheter, we traced the route of our trip, trying to accommodate the immense curiosity that dominated us in the tight timescale of our vacation.

So, in order to see the maximum of the maximum, we would travel by land (car, bus and train) the long way from La Paz (Bolivia) to Aguas Calientes (Peru, the very gateway to Machu Picchu), within fifteen unforgettable days!

The script was planned as follows:

- Sao Paulo (Brazil) - La Paz (Bolivia): by plane

- La Paz - Copacabana (Bolivia): we would go by bus, but, once there, we figure that it was more economical to split a taxi

- Copacabana - Cuzco (Peru): by bus, with a stop in Puno (Peru), to a half-day visit to the floating islands of Uros

- Cuzco - Machu Picchu (by train, in an one-day-trip)

- Cuzco - La Paz (at the last minute we’ve decided to take a plane)

So, we've embarked on this thrilling journey at Sao Paulo, in the white and blue plane of LAB (Lloyd Aereo Boliviano) to land a few hours latter at the La Paz airport, which lies more than 4,000 (four thousand!) Feet high.

That’s why we’ve barely stepped off the plane and begun to feel a strange pressure in the head.
Was it the 'altitude sickness' (soroche)?

... to be continued next friday...

O vôo do balão - 05/11/2010

This week began with the visit of the last of the grasshoppers, which came to rest just in my poor apartment’s garden. The little grasshopper did not sing at all (lucky for my eardrums) and kept walking around the plant (photo), hiding behind its leaves, until it got bored and leave forever.

After this visit, I did not hear anymore the scandalous singing of the grasshoppers that were screaming through the city in previous days.

The week finishes with a crazy balloon crossing the sky of the Irajá district, here in Ribeirão Preto, in a very scary way! The balloon’s flight was a mess: sometimes it flew so low that almost landed on the roofs of the buildings, then it went up... until it could go up enough to pass the wall of tall buildings of Fiusa Avenue...

For the first time it was not funny the colorful dance in the city’s sky.

At Ribeirão Preto city's night  we still see sugar cane straw on fire before harvesting. Even when the flames are not seen, we notice them in the morning, due to the the black soot that cover us.

For those interested in these deliberate Pompeii, there are several studies available on the Web, from which I've chosen today the Helena Ribeiro's one ( from the Environmental Health Department, School of Public Health, University of São Paulo - USP):

"During burning, combustion is incomplete, with the formation of compounds that are not completely oxidized, thus irritating to the respiratory system and, in some cases, carcinogenic."

Today was the second match played by Brazil in this World Cup Soccer: Brazil vs. Ivory Coast.

Although our team has won, it was, in everything else, a different game than the previous one (Brazil vs. North Korea): this time we have seen, from South Africa, some beautiful shots and other controversies ones (as the expulsion of Kaká, that, by the way, was used as a lesson about lies, for little fans) ...

Besides the differences that we saw on the screen, there was at least one other, live from here: unlike our improvised Pyongyang at the first game, when Ribeirao Preto city stopped completely in front of the TV, thoday, the match has not prevented the workers from the sugar cane straw burning service to act, as we can see at the photos  taken immediately after the first goal of Brazil in the match.

Thus, the population of this region suffered one more Goal ... one a beautiful goal against our health and our environment.

It seems to have become a tradition at Ribeirão Preto the dance of balloons in the sky at these days that precede the city's birthday!

It is the second year that the city have the opportunity to vary its skyline and replace the black smoke of burning by colorful balloons!

I've forgotten dengue too!

What a beautiful city!

Bread and circus for everbody! Forever!

May marks the intersection of the chronic problems of Ribeirao Preto city: sugar cane straw burnt is intensified this month, when the drought is starting, which allows the soot hovers in the air, traveling for miles, intoxicating people, who, as if it was not enough, are still subject to dengue, as the dryness is not enough to eliminate the outbreaks of the aedes aegypthy mosquito, our mortal guest (as if an offspring from Zelaya and Ahmadinejad?)...

Breathing Earth e a queimada legal

tradicionalmente ocupadas por indígenas;
II - 100 (cem) metros do limite das áreas de domínio de subestações de energia elétrica;
de 2000;
telecomunicações;
distribuição de energia elétrica;
estaduais;
referência o centro geométrico da pista de pouso e decolagem de aeroportos públicos;

http://www.breathingearth.net/

Fortunately for us brazilian, the map of Breathing Earth is quite generic and I don't think it considers the burning of sugar cane, that that plague the inner State of Sao Paulo at this days.

Who passed through kilometers 391 and 392 of Anhangüera Highway last Sunday night (16-05) knows what I mean:  there were fire spots on each side of the road, belching smoke everywhere.

Is it legal to burn sugar cane straw so nearby the road (and urban areas)? Apparently, yes, it is indeed, according to the legal act that deals with this subject, sugar cane straw can be burned as long as it is as far from things as indicated below:

I - more than 1 (one) km of the perimeter of the urban area defined by municipal law and reserves and areas
traditionally occupied by indigenous people;
II - more than 100 (one hundred) meters from the boundary of the domain areas of electrical substations;
III - more than 50 (fifty) meters counted around the boundary of the ecological station of the biological reserve of parks and other protected areas established in acts of the federal, state or Municipal and wildlife refuge, as the definitions of Federal Law No. 9985 of July 18 2000;
IV - more than 25 (twenty five) meters around the boundary of the areas of field stations telecommunications;
V - more than 15 (fifteen) feet along the limits of the ranges of security of the transmission lines and power distribution;
VI - 15 (fifteen) feet along the boundary of the domain areas of railways and highways and state;
VII - the boundary line that simultaneously matches:
a) the area defined by the circle of radius equal to 6,000 (six thousand) meters, having as a reference the geometric center of the runway and takeoff of public airports;
b) the area whose perimeter is defined from the line delimiting the area of airport assets public away from her at least 2,000 (two thousand) feet, externally in any of its points.

(article 4 of Decreto no. 47.700/2003, which regulates Law no. 11,241/2002, which provides for the gradual elimination of straw burning cane sugar, poorly translated to english, I'm sorry. That's exactly why it's a 'nearly bilingual blog').

Even if it is legal (legally, of course), is it morally right to sacrifice people's health and the environment on behalf of the economy (and there is technology to prevent such an archaic method of harvesting)?

For those who live with it there is no such thing as legal burning.
